Who owns your pet food company?

While most Australian’s are shocked to learn that most dog food is made by foreign giants, you can take heart in knowing that most pet food is at least manufactured here in Australia.

While our labour is expensive compared to Asia or USA, we have lots of high-quality raw ingredients, so it makes sense to make it here.

But who owns all the brands? Well, the industry is absolutely dominated by three foreign-owned groups:

The Real Pet Food Co is majority owned by a Chinese led – Asian investment consortium and has these brands

  • Love’m

Other Foreign-owned brands

    • Black Hawk, ZiwiPeak and K9 Naturals are NZ owned
    • Hill’s Science Diet & Wellness are US owned
  • Applaws is UK owned

So, there are not many major brands left standing.

There are surprisingly few Australian owned & Australian made dog food brands in the market.

Also, note that the new % Australian origin label that is rolling out in human food is not required for pet food.
