While most Australian’s are shocked to learn that most dog food is made by foreign giants, you can take heart in knowing that most pet food is at least manufactured here in Australia.
While our labour is expensive compared to Asia or USA, we have lots of high-quality raw ingredients, so it makes sense to make it here.
But who owns all the brands? Well, the industry is absolutely dominated by three foreign-owned groups:
OffTheLeash.com.au is in no way associated with any of these brands. Their listing does not indicate any endorsement. Make your own mind up 🙂
Mars is a US private company and owns these brands
- My Dog
- Nature’s Table
- Royal Canin
- Good-O and more
Nestle Purina is a Swiss public company and owns these brands
- Lucky Dog
- Fancy Feast and more
The Real Pet Food Co is majority owned by a Chinese led – Asian investment consortium and has these brands
- Billy & Margot
- Nature’s Gift
- Natures’ Goodness
- Farmers Market
- Ivory Coat
- Doctor B’s BARF
- Tucker Time
- Fussy Cat
Other Foreign-owned brands
- Black Hawk, ZiwiPeak and K9 Naturals are NZ owned
- Hill’s Science Diet & Wellness are US owned
- Applaws is UK owned
So, there are not many major brands left standing.
There are surprisingly few Australian owned & Australian made dog food brands in the market.
Also, note that the new % Australian origin label that is rolling out in human food is not required for pet food.
Australian-owned dog food brands include:
- Meals for Mutts
- Australian Dog Food Company
- Prime 100
- Stay Loyal
- Vet’s All Natural & Balanced Life
